Growth hormone acts partly directly and partly by stimulating hepatic IGF-1, the main mediator of its anabolic signalling in muscle, bone and connective tissue. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in adult GH deficiency, replacement raised IGF-1 into the physiological range (J Clin Endocrinol Metab, 2004 · PMID 15126520).

Somatropin (recombinant human growth hormone) is an approved prescription medicine — but only for defined medical indications such as diagnosed adult or childhood growth-hormone deficiency.
